Mandelas thank medical staff

Johannesburg - Representatives of the Mandela family have expressed gratitude to the medical staff who cared for Nelson Mandela, at a gathering held in Houghton, Johannesburg this weekend.

“One of the key values Madiba aspired to was that of service. May you continue to do him proud in your service,” said Sello Hatang, chief executive of the Nelson Mandela Foundation where the ceremony was held. 

Mandela's wife Graca Machel, his ex-wife Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, and his two daughters Zenani and Zindzi were among those who paid tribute to the medical staff. 

Staff from hospitals including Park Lane, Milpark, Johannesburg General, Olivedale, 1 Military and the Pretoria Heart Hospital were praised for their care of Mandela, said Hatang in a statement. 

Former president Mandela died in December last year at the age of 95. He had been suffering from a number of recurring lung infections over the past few years. - Sapa
