2014 Women World Championship Qualifiers
Egypt v Kenya
Uganda v Tanzania
THE Lady Volleyball Cranes will play their first ever competitive match at home when they confront Tanzania in the second round of the 2014 Women World Championship qualifiers tonight.
At the MTN Arena, coach Tonny Lakony will hope to make history by helping Uganda book a slot in the third and final stage of the qualifiers.
The first and last time the team had an international engagement at home was the friendly game against Rwanda in 2004 where Uganda won 3-1.
And from that team, Uganda has maintained only setter Sheilla Omuriwe among the current squad of 12. Uganda will need to beat at least two of the competitors Kenya, Egypt and Tanzania considering that the champions and runners up of Zone V qualify.
Although a number of volleyball enthusiasts including former coach Anthony Ndawula believe it is almost impossible for Uganda to advance past the highly ranked Kenya and Egypt, Lakony is optimistic.
“We have worked hard trying something new. I am aware Kenya and Egypt have also made changes to their teams but there is always hope.
“It is good to make history at the first time the girls will be playing at home,” Lakony said yesterday.
Uganda finished third behind Kenya and Egypt in the first round of the qualifiers in Nairobi in July.
The Egyptian team jetted in first, before Kenya and Tanzania arrived in time for the pre-match technical meeting at Lugogo yesterday.
