President Uhuru Kenyatta |
President Uhuru Kenyatta has today, Wednesday, welcomed the proposal by Palestine to re-open its embassy in Nairobi.
The proposal was made when President Kenyatta met Palestinian leader
Mahmoud Abbas at the Bayan Palace in Kuwait city and assured him the
government will provide the necessary support.
Kenyatta said Kenya
acknowledges the interest of Palestine to re-open its embassy in
Nairobi and what has been requested, land to build a chancery in
Nairobi, will be considered.
The president also said his government supports the Palestinian cause for an independent state.
“Kenya,
alongside other like-minded countries, voted in favour of a resolution
of the United Nations General Assembly to grant Palestine the status of a
non-member state of the UN,” Kenyatta said.
Kenyatta encouraged
peaceful settlement of the dispute between Palestine and Israel,
expressing his support to the Quarter Peace Plan and Annapolis
Declarations, which are committed to peaceful co-existence of the two
states.
The President also met with the Amir of Kuwait His
Highness Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmed Al-Sabah, restating that his government
is committed to working closely with Kuwait and other Arab countries to
strengthen economic and cultural ties.
He also met Presidents Macky Sall of Senegal, Denis Sassou Nguesso of Congo and Paul Kagame of Rwanda.
Kenyatta,
during the separate meetings, said Kenya would work with other African
leaders for peace in the region, Africa and the world.
Kenyatta
held the different meetings while attending the ongoing 3rd Afro/Arab
Summit, which has over 65 Heads of State in attendance.
