Kikwete declares April 13th as Nyerere Day

President Jakaya Kikwete
Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete has designated April 13th as Nyerere Day in honour of Tanzania's first president and founding father Julius Nyerere, also known as Mwalimu Nyerere.

Kiwete made the declaration Monday (October 14th) in Iringa during a ceremony commemorating the 14th anniversary of Nyerere's death.
"Mwalimu [Nyerere] was a great leader. He deserves our honour," Kikwete said in address to the nation. "Therefore, I declare April 13th, the date when Mwalimu Nyerere was born, Nyerere Day."
Kikwete said the quest for "peace, harmony and tranquility" should be held dearly in honour of Nyerere, and the ongoing constitutional review process should strive to help the nation to remain united.
