THE Ministry of Health is set to embark on a nationwide campaign to certify
and accredit all healthcare laboratories to improve health services.
During a prayer breakfast at the health ministry headquarters in Kampala
yesterday, Ruhakana Rugunda, the health minister, said Uganda has a burden of
diseases such as malaria, HIV and tuberculosis, which require support of a
robust laboratory network all over the country.
"No country can achieve the three health-related millennium development
goals of reducing child mortality, improving maternal health and combating
HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis, without quality laboratory services,"
he added.
Rugunda said with improved laboratory services, Uganda will no longer have
to take her test samples to other countries for analysis.
He was optimistic that the certification of all laboratories in the country
will help in elimination of substandard laboratories and services for better
healthcare facilities.
"In collaboration with the World Health Organisation and the African
Society for Laboratory Medicine, we have adopted the strengthening of
laboratory management to improve services," he explained.
At the same function, Rugunda launched the national health laboratory
technical and advisory committee to be headed by Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng, the
director general of health services.
