With 13 million devices sold worldwide, Apple announces a range of new content providers including Sky News for its TV service.
Apple has
revolutionised computers and mobile phones and now it is targeting television.
Apple TV is
upgrading its service in a bid to tap consumers who are increasingly choosing
on demand programming.
The technology
giant has announced a range of new content providers, including Sky News, in
the latest upgrade.
The service,
which is free, will enable millions of customers in the US, UK and Ireland to
access live Sky News directly.
John Ryley, Head
of Sky News, said: "Sky News is always interested in embracing technology
that lets us reach our viewers wherever they want to watch our award-winning
coverage.
"I'm
thrilled that our world-class journalism is now being showcased to millions of
Apple TV customers internationally."
Apple TV is a
set-top device which streams content from online services like iTunes into
televisions.
Some of the new
programmes require a subscription, while others, like Sky News, are free of
charge.
Since it was
introduced in 2007, Apple has sold around 13 million set-top devices, chief
executive Tim Cook said last month.
In a
statement, the company said Apple TV users have downloaded more than one
billion TV episodes and 380 million movies from iTunes to date, and they are
purchasing more than 800,000 TV episodes and more than 350,000 movies per day.Apple designs Macs, iPads, iPhones and the iTunes service. While innovation has taken Apple to the top of the technology industry, more and more of its rivals are getting into the Smart TV market.
In the past, Apple has called its TV venture just a hobby.
