Boss of Bayern Munich football club Uli Hoeness jailed on tax evasion charges

Uli Hoeness
A German court has jailed the President of the Bayern Munich football club for three and a half years on tax evasion charges.

Uli Hoeness was convicted by a court in Munich after a trial that began on Monday.

The former player, who helped West Germany win the 1974 World Cup, admitted that he evaded 27.2 million euros in taxes on money stashed in secret Swiss bank accounts.

Prosecutors argued that Hoeness’s voluntary disclosure – amid investigations by the media – was incomplete.

They insisted he did not meet criteria for an amnesty under German tax
laws designed to encourage tax evaders to come clean.
