Hawks closed down on Tanzania- South Africa drug smuggling syndicate

PretoriaDuring a crime intelligence driven sting operation yesterday in Kempton Park, the Hawks pounced on a syndicate suspected of dealing in drugs between South Africa and Tanzania.

A total 50kg of drugs was seized; 20 kg of Heroine, 15 kg of cocaine and 15 Kg of TIK, worth an estimated R75mil street value. This is a first biggest burst of a drug distributing facility by the Hawks in 2013.

“One would not emphasise more how these drugs are ravaging our communities. I applauded the starling work done by the team thus far. This is a clear festive season message to drug syndicates” said National Head of the Hawks Lieutenant General Anwa   Dramat.

This comes after a Tanzanian woman was fined R30 000, by the Kempton park magistrates court two month ago, after she was pounced trying to smuggle over 100kg of ephedrine packed in her luggage to south Africa.
The suspects will appear in the Kempton Park Magistrates’ court on Friday facing charges of dealing in drugs. More arrests are still on the card.
