- Top military commanders have reportedly begun urgent talks after President Morsi rejected a deadline (of about 14:30 GMT) to reach accord with opponents after days of mass protest.
- The military's high command has said the army was ready to die to defend Egyptians against what it called terrorists and fools.
- Mr Morsi went on national TV to say he would not be dictated to and remained the country's legitimate, elected leader.
- A leading opposition party has appealed to the army to intervene, saying the president has "lost his mind" and "incited bloodshed".
- At least 16 people were killed when a rally of Morsi supporters came under attack by unidentified gunmen in Cairo on Tuesday night.
