Live: Crisis in Egypt

-->
 Live coverage of events in Egypt where the military has given President

Mohammed Morsi an ultimatum to reach agreement with the opposition.

  • Top military commanders have reportedly begun urgent talks after President Morsi rejected a deadline (of about 14:30 GMT) to reach accord with opponents after days of mass protest.

  • The military's high command has said the army was ready to die to defend Egyptians against what it called terrorists and fools.

  •  Mr Morsi went on national TV to say he would not be dictated to and remained the country's legitimate, elected leader.

  • A leading opposition party has appealed to the army to intervene, saying the president has "lost his mind" and "incited bloodshed".

  • At least 16 people were killed when a rally of Morsi supporters came under attack by unidentified gunmen in Cairo on Tuesday night.
  • All times GMT.
