JK, Lipumba in talks on country's peace

By Emmanuel Onyango

Civic United Front national Chairman Professor Ibrahim Lipumba yesterday held private talks with President Jakaya Kikwete at State House in Dar es Salaam.

Among the most crucial matters on the table the opposition leader discussed with the President include how to maintain peace in Mtwara Region, and highlight review the recent visit by US President Barack Obama, and the Millennium Challenge account.

Speaking to The Guardian by phone yesterday Professor Lipumba said he advised the President to ensure the issue of Mtwara residents regarding the construction of the Mtwara – Dar es Salaam gas pipeline is resolved amicably.

Lipumba, a former State House economic advisor during President Ali Hassan Mwinyi, advised the government that any use of force, is an appropriate for lasting solution.

He said the government should be transparent and use dialogue to make the people aware of the importance of the project to the region and to the country as a whole.
Additionally, he appealed to the police to respect rule of law and human rights in their operations instead of resorting to force which causes fear to the public.

They also discussed US government assistance to Tanzania through Millennium Challenge account on the targeted projects, saying the account be increased so that other projects are financed through it.

Lipumba made a fact finding visit to Mtwara early this month to see development projects and observe the effects of recent clashes between civilians and police and soldiers over government plan to construct a 532-kilometre natural gas pipeline.
